Where are the 12k Running Waves?
We've moved to a release and hold system. Runners will be released in groups of 500 participants every 30 to 90 seconds to allow the field to spread out and to minimize congestion along the route. All military personal will begin in their own wave after all 12K runners have crossed the start line, followed immediately by our slower runners and "woggers" (walkers/joggers).
Directions to Vassault Park
From I-5 take Highway 16 West to Exit 3. Follow the signs to Ruston to get to North 37th and Pearl Streets.
Parking will be available at Truman Middle School - $10 per parking spot, $20 for VIP. Proceeds benefit Wilson Rams Girls Basketball. (5801 N. 35th, Tacoma, just across Pearl Street near Vassault Playfield) Or if you rather leave the car at home, we encourage biking to the race. Courage will have a secure bike corral to park your bike. Another option is to ride UBER.
Free clothing/gear check will be offered at the Vassault Park tennis courts the day of the event for participants with an official bib number. Please allow time for check-in process prior to the start of your event.
12k Participants Choosing to Walk
For those participating in the 12k route option, we had to make the difficult decision to omit the walk option due to Point Defiance park constraints. A few changes will take place beginning with this year's event due to an increase in the number of early morning park users wanted to access Point Defiance Park and all of its amenities. Understanding the need to balance access to community resources, we are adjusting our event in response to Metro Parks' requests. We will begin the 12K race at 8:15 a.m. and will no longer host a 12K walk to help minimize the impacts for those trying to access Point Defiance. For those who may not be aware, the outer loop of 5 Mile Drive at Point Defiance is closed to vehicle traffic Mon- Fri until 10:00 a.m., and Sat-Sun until 1:00 p.m providing pedestrians, runners and cyclists the daily opportunity to enjoy the forest experience free from conflict with motorized vehicles.
Participant's who would like to wog (walk/jog) the course are encouraged to sign-up for the 12k run, or the 5k walk. On the 12k course, those participants exceeding one hour for the first three miles (9:15 a.m.) will be required to use a shortcut that shortens the distance to five miles.
Baby Joggers and strollers
Due to safety and insurance concerns, wheeled devices, such in-line skates or bicycles will not be permitted on any courses. Baby joggers are welcome on all routes, but please be mindful of other participants and stay towards the back.
Food, Drink, and More
Complimentary snacks and drink will be available to registered participants after they finish, and a number of vendors will offer samples, products, and services for the entire family. Several food trucks will also be available with items for purchase.
At the finish line, there will be a Sports Medicine tent. Look for the MultiCare Orthopedics & Sports Medicine sign.
Both 12K and 5K running races will be timed by Chronotrack using B-Tag chip technology. Official times will be available immediately after the race. The 5k walking event, as well as the 2K Junior Shuffle, are untimed, non-competitive, and will not be listed on the results page.
All MultiCare employees are encouraged to participate in the Sound to Narrows. Proceeds from the Sound to Narrows benefit MultiCare's Center for Health Equity and Wellness - Promoting the health and wellness of our community by helping individuals make healthy choices. We will also be taking a team photo at 7:45 a.m. near the basketball courts.
